چکیده

This paper studies market clearing in matching markets. The model is non-cooperative, fully decentralized, and in Markov strategies. Workers and firms bargain with each other to determine who will be matched to whom and at what terms of trade. Once a worker-firm pair reach agreement they exit the market. Alternative possible matches affect agents’ bargaining positions. We ask when do such markets clear efficiently and find that inefficiencies – mismatch and delay – often feature. Mismatch occurs whenever an agent’s bargaining position is at risk of deteriorating. Delay occurs whenever agents expect their bargaining position to improve. Delay can be extensive and structured with vertically differentiated markets endogenously clearing from the top down. ∗We thank Kevin Li for excellent research assistance, the editor and referees for their useful suggestions, and the numerous seminar participants who helped us shaping the project. †Faculty of Economics, Cambridge University and Division of Humanities & Social Sciences, California Institute of Technology, [email protected] ‡Department of Economics, London School of Economics, [email protected]

Bargaining and Networks in a Gas Bilateral Oligopoly

In the context of international gas markets, we investigate the interaction between price formation and communication networks in a bilateral duopoly with heterogeneous buyers. Given the communication structure conveyed by a particular buyers-sellers network graph, prices are formed as the outcome of dynamic decentralized negotiations among traders. We characterize, for any network structure, t...

Commitment and (In)Efficiency: a Bargaining Experiment∗

We conduct an experimental investigation of decentralized bargaining over the terms of trade in matching markets. We study if/when efficient matches will be reached and what terms of trade will be agreed. Multiple theories guide our analysis and we test their predictions against the outcomes of our experiments. We find that inefficiencies are extensive and they are driven by the endogenous evol...

Optimal Monetary and Fiscal Policies in a Search Theoretic Model of Monetary Exchange∗

Search models of monetary exchange commonly assume that terms of trade in decentralized markets are determined via Nash bargaining. Bargaining frictions add to the classical intertemporal distortion present in most monetary models, whereby agents work today to obtain cash that can be used only in future transactions. More important, bargaining frictions may cause underproduction in decentralize...

Bargaining with Externalities∗

This paper studies bargaining between a seller and multiple buyers with externalities. A full characterization of the stationary subgame perfect equilibria in generic games is presented. Equilibria exist for generic parameter values, with delay only for strong positive externalities. The outcome is efficient if externalities are not too positive. Increasing the bargaining power of the seller de...

Local Bargaining and Market Fluctuations

Abstract We study how local bargaining in a networked market can cause endogenous fluctuations by a new approach that incorporates non-cooperative bargaining into a large networked economy. In particular, we consider a networked bargaining game that captures trade with intermediaries and define its replications. We examine the agents’ behavior in the limit as the population size goes to infinit...
